Attachment to the Past

Why do we find it so hard to let go of the past, to let go of old experiences and the way we interpret them? Why do we find it so hard to listen to new ideas, new ways of thinking?

So many people live in the past – remembering hurts, old wounds, believing nobody understands their pain enough. So much energy locked up in the past. How much energy is left to live now, in the present?

The past can cloud a person’s life so that they are not really living – they are suffering.

Think how much it happens that a person has had a difficult experience and they say but that happened to me, it’s real, it can’t just go away. But what keeps it alive? Your focus on it, you holding onto it and refusing to let it go.

Why is it held on to? Because we think that is all you can do, because we just can’t let that person/persons get away with what they did. It’s like we believe it’s so much a part of us, almost who we are in some cases, and to let it go seems like madness.

Yes, people do wrong, we all do wrong and we all pay back for this. It is not up to me to ensure another person pays back for what they have done. My part is to forgive, let go and attend to what in me needs changing and healing. When I see my own faults, weaknesses, mistakes then I learn mercy, compassion.

Here is a whole other way of thinking about our lives and our experiences – a new way of understanding the meaning of what we experience in life. To me it makes much more sense and it puts me in charge of my life and not a victim of what happens or has happened.

We have many lives, not just one. Each of us comes into life to learn particular lessons and before we come in we have worked with our Higher Self to decide on the lessons we need to learn in this life.

For me, reincarnation makes sense. As a child I was taught about purgatory – that idea that we stay in this place waiting and waiting till we are ready and pure enough to enter Heaven.  I didn’t like the idea of this at all – hanging around for an eternity. Then, as an adult I read the book the Wild Swans. As I finished the book I thought, thank God I didn’t grow up in China. Then I began to think. Yes, I have had lives like these too and now I am living here in a much easier life. I am at a stage in my evolution where I am to learn different lessons. This life is really a very privileged life. I am not living in a war torn area of the world. I don’t need to be taken up with survival issues. I can open to greater understanding of the meaning and purpose of life.

So I thought that is how it is. We have many lives and each life we come in to learn particular lessons. Everything is teaching us exactly what we are to learn, exactly what will help us to grow and understand more and to live as a Soul.

Interpreting through the eyes of the Soul

It is so different to see our experiences from the perspective of the Soul as opposed to the perspective of ego.

When you are focused on learning to live as a Soul and to learn what this means, then when something happens you are more prepared to think about it as a challenge and opportunity. We can get this with our minds but it can be a different matter when it comes to an actual challenge.

We need to think about this often – that everything that happens is teaching us – that nothing is a bummer: to stop and bless the lesson and think what can I learn from this? What needs healing in me?

Say in your family you felt let down some years back. You felt they acted in a way that was uncaring toward you. You hold this in your heart and think thoughts like I can’t let them away with this. You keep the pain and suffering of that time alive in you and it keeps pulling you down as if it is happening over and over again. You are the one who is suffering and you are carrying this negative energy around with you all the time. Just think, you are living and reliving that suffering over and over again. Why would you continue with this? Why is it so hard to let go of it and forgive?

Because the ego sees this as unforgivable – because you see it as a bummer, wrong, shouldn’t have happened to you – how bad and wrong they were.  This keeps you stuck in a cycle of negativity.

When you think of this from the perspective of the Soul, you would understand it very differently. This lesson was brought to me by my Soul because I needed it. It’s a very tough one for me, bringing up feelings of rejection, hurt, anger.  I want to understand the thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, interpretations in me that are causing these negative feelings so I can free myself of them and heal.  I don’t want to carry the burden of a grudge in my heart. I know I can take charge of my thoughts and feelings and choose forgiveness, understanding and love.  I turn to my Higher Self and ask for help with this.

Purpose and Meaning

Most of the time people are just getting along with the daily stuff, busy and consumed with the day to day. There is little or no thought or time for the bigger picture, the purpose of life. People also live in a lot of fear, worry, doubt. Notice how easily fear comes in and escalates – as you feed it. People deal with issues as they come and find themselves tossed around by the storms of life.

If you want to change this and stop fire-fighting as a way of managing your life, then you need to make space for Spirit and make that inner journey. Life truly is a precious opportunity and there is so much to learn, discover and remember.

Ask yourself what is the purpose of life and write about this in your journal. Imagine you are at the end of your life, looking back on it and think about what you would like your life to have been about.

To get clearer on the purpose of your life, it really helps to make space for meditation, journaling and time in nature at the very least. Each day you need to set aside time for these and make them a priority. These are the practices that will give shape and meaning to your life.

Meditation is time to connect with Spirit and with your Higher Self – and so with love. Just sit in a place where you have quiet and are comfortable, close your eyes and be aware of your breath. Feel your lower abdomen rise and fall as you breathe. When your mind strays just bring it back to the breath. Then think of the word Love and feel the energy of this filling your being. Stay in stillness for 5 to 10 minutes to begin with and increase this gradually until you are able to meditate for 20 minutes. Some days will be better than others in your estimation but it is all good and you will reap the benefits from it as you stay with it. If you forget just get back to it. Don’t give yourself a hard time and never give up. It’s all about keeping on, persevering and finding the gold.

Journaling is also essential to us in our journey through life. When you journal you are listening to yourself and tapping in to your inner wisdom. When you journal with the understanding that everything is teaching you exactly what you need to learn and seeking to discover the opportunity in every lesson/challenge, then you heal and grow. You are taking charge of yourself and your life and no longer feeling a victim.
